Responsibility

Roal Oy is now AB Enzymes Finland Oy

We are committed to responsible business practices

Our responsibility as a biotechnology company is to produce first-class, safe-to-use enzyme products that reduce our customers’ need for raw materials, harmful chemicals and energy usage. We see enzymes as an opportunity to accelerate the transition towards a more sustainable society.

Our aim is to be open and transparent about our operations and impacts. We are committed to good corporate governance principles that guide our day-to-day decision-making. We comply with the ISO 26000 guidance on social responsibility.

Our sustainability targets are based on materiality analyses

In 2021, we conducted an extensive materiality analysis together with our partner AB Enzymes GmbH (AB Enzymes) and other key shareholders. The analysis identified 25 sustainability topics that are relevant for Roal and its stakeholders and those were categorised into four different priority areas based on the results:1) People and well-being, 2) Environment and circular economy, 3) Sustainable supply chain, and 4) Responsible and safe products.

Roal has received the EcoVadis Platinum Medal for its commitment to social responsibility

Roal was awarded with the internationally recognised EcoVadis Platinum Medal in 2021 and 2022 for its long-standing commitment to sustainability. This recognition places us in the top 1% among similar businesses. EcoVadis provides a collaborative platform for companies to globally assess their sustainability and social responsibility on 21 sustainability criteria across the environment, fair labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.

Enzymes – a catalyst for change

Enzymes are proteins which are found in all living organisms and the environment. They act as catalysts in chemical reactions and speed up biochemical reactions. Biodegradable enzymes from renewable sources are one of the leading ‘green chemistry’ technologies. Green chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry, focuses on developing chemical products and processes that are as environmentally friendly and safe as possible. The use of enzymes promotes the responsible use of raw materials in food production and many other industrial processes. Even a small amount of added enzyme has numerous environmental benefits to the process being catalysed. Enzymes reduce the amount of waste produced in the manufacturing process, reduce energy consumption, and improve the quality and appearance of products.

UN Sustainable Development Goals and Roal

The UN has defined 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 subgoals with the aim of ensuring a better and more sustainable future for all. Businesses have a key role to play in achieving the targets. It is therefore important that companies recognise the link between their activities and the SDGs.

We are committed to promoting the UN Sustainable Development Goals and have identified the six most important goals for our operations that we can contribute to through our activities.

  • Goal 2: Zero hunger
  • Goal 3: Good health and well-being
  • Goal 5: Gender equality
  • Goal 8: Decent work and economic growth
  • Goal 12: Responsible consumption and production
  • Goal 13: Climate action

Stakeholder engagement

We want to foster an open dialogue with our key stakeholders. Listening to our stakeholders’ views and expectations, and responding to them is vital to the success of our company and the continuity of our operations. An open dialogue helps us to better understand the environment in which we operate, the impact of our activities and the opportunities and challenges of sustainability.

Either directly or through our sister company AB Enzymes, we are a member or associate of several important industry bodies, such as the Association of Manufacturers and Formulators of Enzyme Products (AMFEP) and the Chemical Industry Federation of Finland’s Responsible Care programme.

Stakeholder collaboration helps us to build knowledge and contribute to the safety and environmental impact of enzyme production, as well as legislation.
